High-bandwidth Communication Link for Unmanned Ground Vehicle or UGV

With the development of science and technology, unmanned ground vehicles have played an important role in various fields such as transportation, logistics and distribution, cleaning, disinfection and sterilization, security patrols. Because of its flexible application, manpower saving and safety guarantee, unmanned vehicles are of great significance to the construction of green and smart cities. In addition, with the global spread of the COVID-19, the demand for untouched services is also increasing.

UGV realize unmanned driving through artificial intelligence, wireless telemetry module, visual computing, radar, monitoring devices and positioning systems. Its front-end sensing devices (such as video cameras, radar sensors, and laser rangefinders, etc.) can collect surrounding scene information and nearby traffic conditions. Then these data information will be transmitted with the help of wireless link, so that the control center can receive and issue feedback instructions.

The wireless communication process of the unmanned vehicle is as follows:

UGV Communication Link: point to point

The point-to-point UGV Command and Control data transmission is realized by carrying the FIM-6600 Ugv Video Data Link module. In this application, both the vehicle end and the receiver use omni-directional dual-band antenna 800Mhz+1.4Ghz, which can make the mobile video transmission own stronger anti-interference ability. After encountering interference, the working frequency can be hopped from 800Mhz to 1.4Ghz to avoid interference and ensure the stability of the UGV datalinks. The ground to ground non-line-of-sight communication distance can reach 1km~3Km.

UGV Communication Link: FD-6100 Mesh Radio Module

In addition to point-to-point and point to multiple point video and control data transmission, in some complex applications, networking communication is required between multiple unmanned vehicles.

UGV data link

As shown in the figure above, this application scenario contains 5 COFDM MESH nodes. The IP MESH module on each UGV can be connected with IP cameras, computers, and voice equipment, and then wirelessly transmit data packets back to the control center.

Each MESH mobile radio node builds a network and automatically finds the optimal path for data transmission or relay. Communication between any two modules is bidirectional.

When the relative position between each UGV is constantly changing, which will not affect the communication of the whole fleet. At the same time, any unmanned ground rover can also obtain the location information of other online UGV in real time.

IWAVE development boards for robotics FD-6100 creates a self-forming, self-healing Mesh network as soon as power is applied to the node. IP Mesh robotics modules offer high data rate connectivity to UGVs in difficult RF and operational environments. The fluid self-healing, self-forming Mesh architecture allows UGVs to exchange and relay mission-critical video and data, both between units and to command elements.

FD-6100 Digital IP MESH Module Key Features
