Wireless Communications That Reach Through Dense Forests

Introduction

IWAVE built a system with large-scale tactical Mesh Radio Network to ensure the fire fighters connected wirelessly in dense forests and harsh natural environments where traditional communication technologies fall short. The mesh network successfully ensure the wireless communication between nodes with high data rate throughput, and bandwidth efficient capacity.

Background

The dense forest will be a problem with traditional communication radio. Because traditional communications through dense foliage and vegetation is challenged by severe multi-path and attenuation. With out line of sight in a thick forest, even the high power systems will have an issueWhich require the communication radio has strong penetrate ability with UHF or VHF frequency band. In order to minimize the loss of forest fires and keep fire fighters safe, Inner Mongolia Forestry Bureau has chosen IWAVE Mobile Ad-hoc Networking radio system to build a emergency communication network for instant secure video, voice and data communications in Daxinganling forest region.

Challenge

Located in the north of China, the Greater Khingan Mountains is the largest virgin forest in China. The total area is 327,200 square kilometers. Rich in resources, it is one of the important forestry bases in China. The complex terrain will be block the signal transmission.

Mobile-ad-hoc-network

In recent years, the demand of video communication has been in a rapid increase. In addition, the old analog systems were badly damaged by lightning and other factors. In the event of fire, the old communication system couldn't meet the demands of dispatching because of its inaccurate positioning and poor.

When fire disaster cause danger, the radio should be a reliable tool to keep first fighters and first responders stay connected. So radios will not be affected by power outages or telecommunications failures caused by natural disasters.

IWAVE tactical communication network should be:

●Long battery life, keeping users connected for long time.

●Accurate GPS tracking to locate the fellow radio users, making it easier to send help if needed.

●Clear video capture and transmitting to support the officers make right and fast decision

●Dynamic and create a rapidly forming, self-adaptive and robust communication network

Solution

After analyzing the customer's existing communications systems and trends, IWAVE built an emergency communications system based on the 1.4Ghz mission-critical tactical communications system in the UHF band. Mobile Ad-Hoc Network (MANET) is a type of structure-less wireless mobile network, in which each node plays the role of the router and host at the same time.

This vital communication improve communication coverage and transmission rates, ensuring that multiple means of communication can be used in the event of a forest fire, thereby minimizing losses caused by forest fires.

Benefits

● High-level integration: This Mobile MESH Networked system provides trunking voice, multimedia dispatch, real-time video transferring, GIS location, audio/video full duplex conversation etc,.

● High mobility: Each node can join in or leave the network any time

● Fast Deployment: Compact and portable enclosure design allows operators to instantly build a wireless communication network within 15minutes for emergency response.

● Easy to use: One-press Startup, does not require additional configuration

● Wide environmental adaptability: Support NLOS environment, ground vehicle, airborne, bodyworn, etc.

● Diverse Terminal Range: Supports Trunking handheld, manpack device, UAV, portable dome camera, intelligent glasses, etc.

● Highly adaptive: IP67 water and dust proof, high shock resistance performance, -40°C~+55°C operating temperature.

● Visual Command and Dispatching Platform: Provides professional dispatch, video convergence, unified push to the video wall. It enable the command center officer have an efficient conference management and decision-making.

With IWAVE IP MESH system, the Inner Mongolia Forestry Bureau now have a long-range, mobile and non-line of-sight communications system that can transmit a greater volume of HD video, voice and telemetry data.
